Saint John, N.B. looking at turning industrial waste heat into district energy system

Waste energy from some of Saint John, N.B.’s largest industrial companies could heat buildings in the city’s core area. City council has asked Natural Resources Canada to fund a feasibility study headed by consulting and research company TorchLight Bioresources Inc.
Mayor Donna Reardon said the waste heat can be used for a practical purpose and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the same time. According to TorchLight Bioresources, Canada lags behind most of the northern world in district energy systems.
Saint John’s manager of asset and energy management said that with the city’s commitment to reducing its greenhouse emissions by 30 per cent by 2025, it would be wise to become involved in such a project.
